Choosing your wedding DJ is one of those decisions that quietly makes or breaks your entire reception — but most couples don’t know what to actually ask beyond “are you available on our date?” After 15+ years doing this in Michigan, here are the questions I always encourage couples to ask, whether they’re talking to us or anyone else.
1. How many weddings have you actually DJ’d?
Experience matters more than almost anything else. A DJ who’s played hundreds of weddings has seen the timeline hiccups, the awkward silences, the “the flower girl won’t walk down the aisle” moments — and knows how to handle them without your guests ever noticing. Don’t be afraid to ask directly, and don’t settle for a vague answer.
2. Are you insured?
This one surprises people, but it matters. Most quality venues actually require vendors to carry liability insurance before they’ll let them set up. If a DJ can’t answer this clearly, that’s worth pausing on.
3. Do you have backup equipment?
Gear fails. It’s rare, but it happens — a speaker blows, a laptop crashes. A professional DJ has a real contingency plan, not just a hope that nothing goes wrong. Ask what happens if something breaks mid-reception.
4. Will you personally be at our wedding, or is it a team?
This is an increasingly common and important question as more DJ companies grow into teams rather than solo operators. There’s no wrong answer here — a well-trained team can be just as strong as a single DJ — but you deserve clarity on exactly who’s showing up on your day and what standard they’re held to.
5. Are you also our MC, or just playing music?
Some DJs purely mix music. Others also serve as your Master of Ceremonies — making announcements, coordinating with your other vendors, keeping the reception timeline on track. These are genuinely different skill sets, and it’s worth knowing which one you’re getting.
6. Can we meet before we book?
A real consultation — going over your vision, your must-play and do-not-play lists, your timeline — is where a generic DJ turns into someone who actually understands your day. If a company won’t offer any conversation before you sign, that’s a signal worth noticing.
7. What’s actually included in your package?
Sound system, ceremony audio, lighting, MC services, setup and teardown — these can vary a lot between quotes that look similar on the surface. Always ask for an itemized breakdown so you’re comparing apples to apples, not just a number.
8. Can we see real reviews, not just testimonials on your own website?
Anyone can put glowing quotes on their own site. Ask for a link to their Google, WeddingWire, or The Knot reviews instead — third-party platforms are much harder to fake, and the pattern across dozens of reviews tells you more than any single quote.
9. What happens if you’re sick or unavailable on our wedding day?
A real, established company has a backup plan — another qualified DJ who can step in if something genuinely unexpected happens. This is an uncomfortable question to ask, but a professional company will have a real answer, not a shrug.
10. Have you worked at our venue before?
Not a dealbreaker if the answer is no, but a DJ who already knows your venue’s layout, sound quirks, and vendor coordination style can save you real stress on the day itself.
The Bottom Line
The right DJ isn’t just about who has the flashiest lights or the lowest price — it’s about who you can trust to read your room, handle the unexpected, and make sure your day feels exactly like you. Asking the right questions upfront is how you find that out before you sign anything.
